This week Cloudflare started selling to software

By Anzon Wong2 min read

Not selling software to people, the customer itself is software. Three things shipped together: a domain Registrar API (beta), an email service any agent can send from (public beta), and a path where an agent creates its own account, obtains API tokens, buys a domain and deploys. Nobody on the order form.

It sounds like science fiction. The part worth stopping on is in the details.

💳 The agent never touches your card. It uses a payment token issued by Stripe; card numbers are never shared with it. There is a default ceiling of $100 a month per provider, and a human still has to grant permission and accept the terms of service. So this isn't "an AI loose with your credit card", it's an AI holding a voucher you capped, on a card it cannot see.

🔑 That, I think, is the real story: the limit was designed in, not bolted on. The hundred dollars was there on launch day, not added after something went wrong, the reverse of how software has worked for twenty years.

🎓 What does that mean for education? If the agent can already buy, register and deploy by itself, then "knowing how to use the tool" loses value quickly. What's left is whether you can set the boundary. How much? What must it ask about first? What is never allowed? None of those are technical questions. They're judgement, and they have to be answered before something goes wrong, not after.

It's the same coin as the EU AI Act post two days ago: the more the machine can do, the more the human job concentrates into drawing lines and judging results. Labels and limits are both set by people.

⚠️ Two things not to overstate. This is one company's announcement, in beta, not an industry-wide fact. And "agents buying things themselves" sounds autonomous, but a human accepts the terms, a human sets the cap, and the card number never reaches the agent. That's a supervised economy, not an autonomous one. The difference is large.

If your agent could buy things for you, what monthly ceiling would you give it?
