This week:
・21 Oct: PHP shipped emergency patches for two critical flaws (rated 9.2 out of 10), reportedly found by researchers using AI models. Government sites in the Netherlands and Finland went offline for a while, and some UK council and Met Police sites followed
・22 Oct: the union at Micron's Taoyuan plant in Taiwan held a 24-hour strike, which Nikkei calls Taiwan's first chip-worker strike, over a share of AI memory profits (though AFP saw only a handful of strikers outside)
・21 Oct: Walmart opened its store to AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Meta's Muse, while Amazon is blocking AI shopping agents

Deep dive: Anthropic's Claude Duet
A brief each morning, then a check of your connected apps every few hours, messaging you only when something needs you. It runs on Opus 5.5 in its own cloud computer. It waits for your approval before it sends a message, pays, signs or deletes anything, and trading securities or moving money between accounts are off-limits even with approval.

Background checks count towards your usage limits, and the more apps you connect, the more it can see.

But the AI decides what counts as urgent, and Anthropic says it can misjudge that. Background checks count towards your usage limits, and the more apps you connect, the more it can see.

My own assistant messages me first too: at 7:30 this morning it sent me three topics to pick from, and Claude Duet was one of them. The difference is that I set when it contacts me and I choose the topic. Duet decides for itself. For now it is a waitlist for US Pro and Max subscribers, so here in the UK I cannot use it yet.

Sources: Anthropic, php.net and Walmart (official); WJLA, Nikkei Asia, Focus Taiwan, AFP and TechCrunch (reporting)
